In a torrid final minute of play which saw the lead change six times, a field goal by Iowa junior guard Ally Disterhoft with eight seconds left in the contest gave the Hawkeyes (15-11 overall, 5-9 Big 10) a 76-75 lead and momentarily made her the hero in a much-needed conference road win.
Then Golden Gophers (18-7, 10-4) redshirt senior and Big 10 scoring leader Rachel Banham tallied the final basket of her 35-point performance, getting a 3-point shot off just before time expired, to instead hand Iowa a 78-76 defeat.
The Hawkeyes came out playing like the team that already had nine conference victories instead of Minnesota, starting the game on a 12-5 run that took advantage of the Golden Gophers’ suspect defense.
