On Monday morning, the Iowa Hawkeyes landed their new head coach in Drake’s Ben McCollum. He’s a coach that brings a new style to Iowa City than departing head coach Fran McCaffery.
Some have viewed it as a slow pace, but the reality is it’s simply a much more disciplined approach on both ends of the floor. McCollum demands excellent team defense and maximum effort on the glass. On the offensive end, he teaches efficiency and selflessness.
Building a roster full of guys capable of maximizing potential in that system is an art. McCollum showed he was capable of doing that in year one at Drake, but now he moves to the Big Ten and with the majority of Iowa’s roster already in the portal, a quick rebuild is easiest if some players familiar with the system and its demand come with McCollum.
