OFFICIAL: Hodgson quits as England manager after Iceland defeat

Roy Hodgson has resigned as England manager after a 2-1 defeat to Iceland sent his side crashing out of Euro 2016.

Wayne Rooney had given England an early lead from the penalty spot but Iceland quickly equalised through Ragnar Sigurdsson before Joe Hart's error led to Kolbeinn Sigthorsson's winner in the 18th minute.

Hodgson read the following from a pre-prepared statement in his post-match press conference: "My contract was always up after the Euros, so now is the time for someone else to oversee the progress that this young, hungry and extremely talented group of players.

"They’ve been fantastic and done everything that’s been asked of them.
