The 29-year-old was limited to 22 games in 2015 due to injury, and will now likely feature even less in 2016.
The Philadelphia Union are set to be without their captain for an extended period of time.
At his weekly press conference Wednesday, Union head coach Jim Curtin revealed that Maurice Edu will miss at least three months with a stress fracture in his leg.
"We will be losing Maurice Edu for a significant amount of time," Curtin said. "There's a fracture that was found in his leg. It's a frustrating process for everybody involved, in terms of finding a diagnosis.
