Rumors on Twitter prompted the Ligue 1 side into condoning an act that it described as "shameful" and "inhumane."
Lyon has issued a statement declaring that attacking midfielder Mathieu Valbuena is still alive.
Twitter trolls claimed Sunday night the 32-year-old had died in a string of posts the Ligue 1 club described as "shameful" as it issued a denial.

"Mathieu Valbuena is happily alive contrary to what vile individuals peddle on Twitter," read the club's Twitter post Monday.
