FIFA president Gianni Infantino has said he would back a co-hosted World Cup, giving hope to the prospect of a joint bid by Argentina and Uruguay to host the tournament on its 100th anniversary in 2030.
Infantino, elected as president in succession to Sepp Blatter last month, made his remarks at the South American Football Confederation's (CONMEBOL) headquarters in Paraguay.
He indicated that he believed the World Cup history of the two nations made them appropriate contenders to host the 2030 tournament, and revealed that he disagreed with FIFA's previous opposition to co-hosted events.
"An important theme is whether the World Cup can be played in more than one country," Infantino said.
