San Jose Earthquakes midfielder Matheus Silva came out of a coma late Thursday morning and is now able to speak, the team announced Thursday.
The 20-year-old was left in critical condition after a swimming incident at Lake Tahoe.
San Jose's statement lays out the events of the day and says that Silva "is responsive and able to speak" and that the midfielder "is expected to undergo a series of outpatient cognitive and physical tests before being released from the Intensive Care Unit.
