Argentina, Uruguay to bid together to host 2030 World Cup

Argentina and Uruguay will form a joint bid to co-host the 2030 World Cup, the presidents of the two South American countries said on Thursday.

The 2030 event will mark the 100-year anniversary of the first World Cup, hosted Uruguay in 1930. They defeated Argentina 4-2 in the final.

"We have decided that our best opportunity is to jointly nominate ourselves as candidates," Argentina President Mauricio Macri said in a news conference in Uruguay.

Uruguay also won the World Cup when they hosted in 1950, and Argentina won the only time they staged the tournament in 1978.
