INDIANAPOLIS — A month or so ago, maybe two months ago, Jeff Saturday got a text message from Howard Mudd.
The old offensive line coach had seen something that reminded him of Saturday. The way Saturday had started his career as an undrafted free agent and ended it in the Ring of Honor, the way the former Colts center has carried himself as a husband and father.
That stuff — the texts, the relationship he built with his players — was the real secret of Mudd’s success.
“I’m not sure I’ve ever been around a coach who pulled the greatness out of his players as effectively as Howard did,” Saturday said.
