Report: Colts expected to place DE Samson Ebukam on IR with designation to return

According to The Indy Star’s Joel Erickson, the Indianapolis Colts are expected to place starting defensive end Samson Ebukam (Achilles) on injured reserve and use one of their two available ‘designations for a return’—meaning Ebukam could possibly return later in the year:

The Colts plan to put defensive end Samson Ebukam on injured reserve today with a designation to return after Ebukam tore his Achilles tendon early in training camp.

While Ebukam suffered a very serious lower leg injury, a torn Achilles, which generally takes at least a year—if not more to recover from (*and can potentially be career altering), the Colts must believe that an Ebukam return for a late season stretch run is at least remotely realistic, to allocate him one of their two designations to return.
