Entering what very well could be his last week as the Indianapolis Colts’ head coach, Chuck Pagano faces a stacked deck. His only healthy quarterback is named Stephen Morris. His team has a roughly 3,300-to-1 shot to slip into the backdoor of the playoffs. And Black Monday, the NFL’s annual firing frenzy, is looming, just six days away.
“My late father-in-law used to tell (my wife) and I all the time, ‘Life’s tough. That’s just how it is,’” a reflective Pagano said Monday.
Especially if you’re Chuck Pagano. His Colts, 18-12 winners Sunday in Miami, sit at 7-8 on the season and need about a hundred games (OK, slight exaggeration) to fall their way to punch a playoff ticket.
