Griff Whalen has been roasted on the Internet and talk radio since Sunday night for his role in the Colts' embarrassing, botched fake punt against the New England Patriots.
But the Indianapolis backup receiver, it turns out, wasn't really at fault at all.
Although the Colts had practiced the play for quite some time, the player snapping the ball in practice to safety Colt Anderson was not Whalen, but rookie safety Clayton Geathers, punter Pat McAfee explained on radio during the "Bob & Tom Show." Whalen never performed that particular role in practice.
Geathers suffered a knee injury in the first half of the game and did not return.
