INDIANAPOLIS — For the moment, as the rest of the sports world shuts down competition due to the looming threat of the coronavirus pandemic, the NFL is still able to conduct its business. And as always, the first order of business at the start of the league year Wednesday is a big one.

Free agency.

A chance for teams to spend their cold, hard-earned cap space on veteran stars who can instantly upgrade a roster.

Or, in a lot of cases, fail to add anything near the level of play their salary indicates. For every team like the Green Bay Packers, a team that rebuilt its defense by throwing big bucks at pass rushers Za’Darius Smith and Preston Smith, there are two more like the Browns and the Jets, who made big, splashy moves last March and got little to show for it.
