How a roof became such a player in the NFL

The conversation brews before every Indianapolis Colts home game. Sometimes brief. Sometimes lengthy.

On one side, coach Chuck Pagano, general manager Ryan Grigson and chief operating officer Pete Ward.

On the other side, owner Jim Irsay.

Should the roof at Lucas Oil Stadium — the roof, that much-talked-about retractable ceiling that has been criticized, scrutinized and praised — open?

Irsay gets input from the trio. They talk about the weather — and only the weather — Ward says. Then …

“Jim makes the final decision,” Ward said.

Irsay’s decision, for 56 regular-season games since the $720 million Lucas Oil Stadium opened in 2008, has been to open the roof 18 times.
