For Colts defense, the future is now

When you draft just one defensive player in Rounds 1 through 4 for three years straight, and that one selection is revealed to be a bust, you’re going to have predictable results.

The Indianapolis Colts serve as proof.

Their defense has languished somewhere between poor and average in recent seasons. And it’s old, the product of their necessary reliance on free agency to address the resulting defensive weaknesses.

But, finally, we’re beginning to see a shift. And it’s about time.

The same Colts regime that went all-in on offense in its first three drafts, then used their one early defensive pick on linebacker Bjoern Werner, finally focused some much-needed attention on a disregarded defense in 2015.
