INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis Colts' decision to release veteran middle linebacker D'Qwell Jackson should be considered surprising
While he's a veteran who knows the system and can play the run, the 33-year-old Jackson was clearly a step slower last season and saves the Colts $5.5 million in salary-cap room. His release adds to the growing list of needs for new Colts general manager Chris Ballard.
The Colts could end up with four new starting linebackers next season because Robert Mathis retired and Erik Walden is a free agent.
