INDIANAPOLIS – The Colts are signing former Pittsburgh Steelers fullback Roosevelt Nix to a one-year deal, a league source confirmed to IndyStar, in a move that adds another hammer of a blocker to an already potent running game.
Nix, listed at 5-11, 250 pounds, rarely carried or caught the ball in five seasons with the Steelers, but he is an excellent lead blocker who made the Pro Bowl in 2017, and Nix also adds an enormous amount of value as a core special teamer.
There is precedent for Frank Reich using a fullback in the offense.
Back in 2018, the Colts picked up former Bengals tight end Ryan Hewitt after roster cuts at the end of training camp, and Hewitt was used mostly as a fullback, playing 182 snaps on offense during the regular season despite touching the ball only once, a 1-yard touchdown grab.
