Breaking Down the Financial Impact of Gosder Cherilus’ Release

In a relatively unexpected move, the Colts cut right tackle Gosder Cherilus this afternoon, another reminder of how poorly the 2013 offseason went for Indianapolis.

Ryan Grigson has had some very underrated moves during his tenure as general manager, but the 2013 offseason (draft, free agency, T-Rich) is not a period to look back upon with fondness.

The move hints at a lack of faith in Cherilus’ recovery from surgery this offseason, although Stephen Holder of The Indianapolis Star did say that the team attempted to re-structure Cherilus’ contract before releasing him. There is a sense that Cherilus still has something left, but the Colts simply couldn’t stomach paying him an excessive amount any longer.
