INDIANAPOLIS — They're three years removed from that surreal, 10:30 p.m. news conference, the night Jim Irsay floored everyone and declared Ryan Grigson and Chuck Pagano “tied at the hip” after handing each a multiyear extension. “I’m convinced we have the right stuff to win a world championship,” Irsay said in January 2016. He was wrong.
They're two years removed from Grigson’s exit, the hiring of a new general manager in Chris Ballard, and the beginning of an 18-month odyssey that would threaten the star quarterback’s future and linger like a black cloud over the franchise, not to mention the entire city.
