Alie-Cox has been on the NFL's radar for the last few years as an athletic 6-foot-7, 250-pound tight end prospect. He held a workout last week with more than 15 teams in attendance, and was able to sign with the Colts before the draft because he was eligible for last year's draft.
The Kansas City Chiefs and Seattle Seahawks were the other teams that showed the most interest in signing Alie-Cox, who hasn't played football since middle school.
Indianapolis does have experience in converting former college basketball players to tight ends. They signed Erik Swoope from Miami after he went undrafted in the 2014 draft, and he caught 15 passes for 297 yards and a touchdown this past season. However, Swoope played in just one game and didn't catch a pass before 2016.
Alie-Cox averaged 9.5 points, 4.2 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game this season for VCU.
