My gut says no way Indianapolis chooses to part ways with running back, Joseph Addai. He fits the Colts offensive scheme and has a good relationship with Peyton Manning. But...Addai’s durability issues are becoming a concern. He has missed 14 games over the past four years, half of those games from last year alone. Dumping him and getting all-purpose back Reggie Bush could have its benefits. He immediately adds a big boost in special teams as a return man. The Colts haven’t had a home run threat back returning kicks in years. Last year, the team averaged less than 20 yards on kickoff returns and less than 7 on punt returns with only one touchdown total. Reggie Bush may not reach the endzone 5 times a year in returns but he has the ability to break off long ones every time he touches the ball. The second biggest advantage Bush gives the Colts is the ability to play receiver. Bush will definitely see his fair share in the backfield but with the Colts durability issues at receiver, he has the versatility to line up in the slot and rotate in with other guys. Everyone knows Reggie can make some amazing plays so the more touches the better.
What are the cons of adding Reggie Bush to the Colts roster? Number one is of course, about the money. Don’t forget the Colts are trying to resign Manning to a huge contract and any high profile player is going to take away from that pending offer. Reggie has shown he would like to get paid, even though he has no true position. The second deals with the scheme and his ability to pass block. Pass blocking for backs is a must have with the Colts and he isn’t solid with his. Not that he is bad, but he would need to significantly improve to get more playing time. He doesn’t suit anyone as a fulltime back and isn’t the poster boy for staying healthy. What makes him more of an upgrade than Joseph Addai? Reggie Bush may have much to offer for Indy but don’t be too quick to part ways with Addai, who’s production hasn’t really suffered when he is healthy and on the field. Assuming he can continue that production, all Indy needs is for him to stay healthy. The Colts added Delone Carter through the draft and this adds depth at the position to spell Addai and reduce some of that wear and tear. Should the Colts really decide to let Addai go, Bush may not be the first option they look for in the free agency market but he is worth a glance. As of now, we’re still waiting for that CBA to get done so it is hard to predict what will happen in Indy.
