With a bevy of expiring contracts heading into March 10th's free agency period, the Indianapolis Colts can afford to make a big splash when it comes to targeting marquee free agents.
Zak Keefer of the Indianapolis Star has one very expensive name for the Colts to place at the top of their free agent wishlist if they indeed clear contracts like Trent Richardson, Ricky Jean-Francois, and LaRon Landry off the books - Detroit Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh:
We'll have to wait and see if that's the course Colts general manager Ryan Grigson takes with this team in the coming months, but if indeed it is, he'll create substantial breathing room beneath the salary capheading into free agency. Those moves could provide the sort of cash the Colts would need to land a franchise-altering talent that could push them over the hump.
One of those talents is spelled S-u-h.
Sure, there's a long way to go before Ndamukong Suh, the Detroit Lions' petulant pass-rusher, is on the open market. All the Colts can do in the meantime is prepare. By dumping even a few of those contracts – Jean-Francois (due $6.1 million next season) and Landry ($5.7 million) are especially critical – Grigson will find himself somewhere between $35-40 million under the cap ahead of March's free agent blitz.
The likelihood of the Detroit Lions signing Suh to a mega-contract before free agency on March 10th is slim, so the Colts will likely have the ammunition and cash to make a run at the dominant defensive lineman - provided he doesn't get franchise tagged for a whopping $26.7 million by the Lions' brass.
