The Indianapolis Colts may have found a get-out-of-jail free card in their ongoing struggles with running back Trent Richardson.
By suspending Richardson for two games, the Colts may have voided the contract provision that guarantees his 2015 salary. Richardson is due to make $3.18 million next season, but multiple individuals in and close to the front office have intimated that the team wants him gone. If the suspension was handed down in an effort to get him off Indy's books, a release will likely be coming soon.
Richardson proved to be a massive disappointment after the Colts traded a first-round pick to the Cleveland Browns for him in September 2013. Richardson averaged 2.9 yards per carry in 14 games with the Colts last year, and that number barely improved in 2014. Richardson played in 15 games this season, starting 12, but could only muster 3.3 yards per attempt.
Ahmad Bradshaw and Daniel Herron both averaged over 4.5 yards per carry for the Colts this season, and were receiving most of the carries by the time the season wrapped up. Richardson's potential will likely lead another team to roll the dice on him, but it sounds like his time in Indianapolis is approaching an end.
