Roster cuts are approaching for the Indianapolis Colts, which mean the Colts will be forced to trim their roster down to 53 players. The Colts will mostly cut players to get down to the limit, but Indianapolis will also explore some trade options. There are a few positions the Colts have extra talent, so the team will try to deal players and get something back in exchange.
Trades before the regular season starts do happen, but they're very tough to predict and there are typically few in number. So these deals probably won't happen, but that doesn't mean the Colts won't at least look into trading them. Here are three players the Colts could try to trade before the season starts.
WR Phillip Dorsett
Dorsett is already reportedly on the trade block and it's easy to understand why. The former first round pick has not become the players the Colts thought he would. While battling some injuries, Dorsett has posted just 51 catches for 753 yards and 3 TDs since joining the NFL in 2015. That's bust territory, although Dorsett still has speed and youth on his side. Kamar Aiken could handle the No. 3 role as a slot WR, while Chester Rogers has drawn praise in training camp, although he's dealing with an injury. A late round pick was the asking price for Dorsett in the report from Lombardi. The Buffalo Bills, who need outside WR help, could be a fit. The San Francisco 49ers also love speed with Kyle Shanahan, which could make them a fit.
DT David Parry
Parry started all 16 games each of the last two years, with 49 tackles and four sacks. But Parry could be trade bait. Remember, it's a new Colts regime and GM Chris Ballard signed Al Woods in the offseason and drafted Grover Stewart this year. The release of Kendall Langford helps Parry's chances, but if the Colts only elect to keep seven defensive linemen for their 3-4 scheme, Parry might be the odd man out. The Colts could look to add another later round pick if a team (perhaps the Denver Broncos?) decides they need some defensive line help.
LB Sean Spence
I wasn't sure about this player and I actually considered more surprising and bigger names like Vontae Davis and T.J. Green. But, I went for a player less likely to make the roster. Sean Spence was all way down at fourth on the Colts' first depth chart at the WLB spot. Jon Bostic, Antonio Morrison, Anthony Walker and Edwin Jackson were all ahead of Spence on that depth chart and worked ahead of him in the first preseason game. Last week against the Cowboys, Spence did not play because of an injury. That doesn't help Spence's chances of making the roster, which means the offseason pickup could be cut. At the very least, the Colts would try to trade Spence, with the Tennessee Titans and Pittsburgh Steelers (two teams Spence has played for) likely near the top of the calling order.
