BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana men's golf freshman Clay Merchent made his mark on the IU record book this season as he set a new low average for a freshman with a 72.46. The mark bests Jorge Campillo's previous record of 72.67 that he set in 2006.
In addition, Merchent's season average is the best for any Hoosier since Alex Martin posted a 72.33 in 2010 and it is the 10th best average in IU history (both 20 round minimums).
"Clay Merchent has quickly established himself as one of the premier golfers in the Big Ten Conference and he is on his way to becoming one of the top players in the country," Coach Mike Mayer said.
