When Allen arrived as Indiana's defensive coordinator in 2016, his Hoosier unit proceeded to allow 10.4 fewer points per game than in 2015, an improvement ranking fourth nationally. Ranking fifth nationally in that category, at 10.3, was South Alabama. South Alabama's defensive coordinator was Kane Wommack. Who, as of Dec. 27, is now Indiana's defensive coordinator. And that makes all sorts of sense. Because Allen was mentored in his favored 4-2-5 scheme by Wommack's father, Dave, who was defensive coordinator at Ole Miss while Allen served as linebackers coach – and Kane Wommack was a graduate assistant.
