This week, Indiana University Athletics will launch a year-long celebration of one of the most significant dates in the history of intercollegiate athletics.
This Thursday, June 23, is the 50th anniversary of the enactment of the Education Amendments and Title IX, the 1972 federal legislation co-authored by IU alumnus and former U.S. Senator Birch Bayh. Among other things, the legislation was designed to address sex discrimination and provide equal access and opportunities to women at publicly-funded institutions such as Indiana University.
"No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from the participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance," Title IX reads.
