Even with a trimmed-down 16-team FCS playoff bracket, the Missouri Valley Football Conference has five league members in the field.
South Dakota State was the No. 1 overall seed after knocking off North Dakota State in the Dakota Marker rivalry on Saturday.
NDSU also was selected along with other MVFC teams North Dakota, Southern Illinois and Missouri State.
With 10 automatic berths, only six at-large playoff spots were available. The MVFC grabbed four of those.
Illinois State opted out of the spring season after four games because of injury and depth concerns.
