SAVANNAH, Ga. — My journey as the Bradley basketball beat writer for the Peoria Journal Star began 28 years ago in this picturesque and historical city.
Boarding a United Express flight to Chicago on the morning of Nov. 23, 1990, I joined coach Stan Albeck’s final BU team on board as we eventually made our way to Savannah and checked in to the DeSoto Hilton.
The next day, we motored 55 miles to Statesboro, home of Georgia Southern University.
The game was played at cozy 4,325-seat Hanner Fieldhouse. Georgia Southern, then a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference, was just starting to make a name for itself in Division I, having competed in the 1987 NCAA tournament and the NIT the following two seasons.
