NORMAL — When Brock Spack emerges from the Kaufman Football Building on Saturday to guide his Illinois State football team in the season opener against St. Xavier, he will reach a level only three previous Redbird coaches have attained.
Spack is the first Redbird coach to attain that milestone since Edwin Struck wrapped up a 20-year career in 1964.
Yet it’s more than longevity that has made Spack’s tenure noteworthy. In nine seasons, Spack’s 68 victories rank behind only the 86 compiled by Struck in ISU history.
At 68-40, his 63.0 winning percentage is better than any Redbird coach in more a century.
