EUGENE, Ore. – Fifth-year senior Sydney Laufenberg placed fifth overall in the discus throw at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, earning her first career First Team All-America honors on Saturday afternoon at the historic Hayward Field.
Laufenberg's second throw was her best of the day, rebreaking her school record with a personal-best mark of 58.02 meters (190-4 ft.). With that mark, Laufenberg finished fifth overall, becoming the first woman in school history to earn First Team All-America honors in the discus.
Her qualification for the NCAA Outdoor Championships was already historic, as she became the first women's discus thrower in Illinois State track & field history to qualify for the discus twice in her career and was one of only five women in school history to qualify in the same event in back-to-back seasons.
