Kindred: January works well for Collins weekend

It was fitting Illinois State honored Doug Collins this weekend … a January weekend. Historically, January was a good month for the face of Illinois State basketball.

Forty-four years ago this month — Jan. 3, 1973 — Collins broke his own school record with 57 points against the University of New Orleans. He was 24 of 39 from the field and 9 of 9 at the free-throw line at Horton Field House.

Ten points came in overtime before Collins fouled out with two minutes to go. He played long enough to gain a fan in New Orleans coach Ron Greene.
