But the Illinois State senior's role changed dramatically when he suffered a broken wrist in a March 10 game at Vanderbilt. He has made the transition from the Redbirds' first baseman to their first base coach.
"It's funny the way things work out like that," Hutchinson said. "That's baseball. Crazy things happen every game, every season."
Hutchinson was hit by a pitch in the final game of a weekend series. He initially stayed in the game but felt a sharp pain the next inning in the field while taking a throw.
Hitting .405 with 10 RBIs in 37 at-bats at the time, Hutchinson's season was over.
