ST. LOUIS — When Doug Elgin announced Wednesday that he will retire at the end of this academic year as commissioner of the Missouri Valley Conference, the tributes began pouring in.
Media folks and coaches alike weighed in with best wishes for a man who has spent 33 years steadily guiding the MVC through the ever-changing landscape of college athletics. He is the Valley’s longest serving commissioner in the league’s 114-year history.
St. Louis broadcaster Frank Cusumano called him “one of the finest people I’ve met in sports.”
Indiana State basketball coach Greg Lansing referred to Elgin on Twitter as the “GOAT” (greatest of all time).
