Southern Illinois' pitchers held Illinois State's offense in check as the Salukis swept a Missouri Valley Conference softball doubleheader Friday in Carbondale.
Brianna Jones outdueled Regan Romshek in the opener as SIU prevailed, 1-0, before the Salukis took a 4-1 win in the second game. ISU fell to 9-20 overall and 1-3 in the league ahead of Saturday's finale of the three-game series.
In the opener, SIU (18-8, 4-0) scored on a single in the second inning by Merri Anne Patterson. Romshek (3-5) allowed just three hits in the circle for the Redbirds while walking none and striking out two.
