PEORIA — The Bradley-Illinois State men’s basketball rivalry began 115 years ago, but didn’t really blossom until the Redbirds joined the Missouri Valley Conference in 1980.
I’ve covered most of those spirited matchups — for six years as the Journal Star’s area college basketball writer focusing on Illinois State and the last 29 in a more expanded role covering Bradley. It’s high time to put some of those memories on paper as the teams gear up for their 127th meeting Wednesday at Carver Arena.
Donewald vs. Versace
In the 1980s, Bradley coach Dick Versace’s flamboyance and colorful comments in the media always contrasted nicely with ISU coach Bob Donewald’s stern personae and taciturn approach during interviews.
