NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Carter Whitt's fadeaway jumper at the overtime buzzer lifted Belmont to a 99-97 victory over Illinois State on Wednesday in the Missouri Valley Conference basketball opener for both teams.
The Bruins moved to 7-2, while ISU slipped to 4-4.
The Redbirds lost despite outshooting Belmont overall, from 3-point range and at the free throw line along with grabbing more rebounds.
ISU's 18 3-pointers (in 33 attempts) set a visiting team record at the Curb Event Center and were the second highest total in school history.
