SAN ANTONIO – Senior SS Luke Shadid extended his season-spanning hitting streak to seven games by going 2-for-4 and junior LHP Brooks Gosswein completed 6.0 strong innings, but Incarnate Word starting pitcher Luke Taggart was up to the challenge, leading the host Cardinals (1-0) to a 5-0 win against Bradley (0-1) in the season-opener for both teams Friday night at Sullivan Field.
Gosswein (0-1) took the loss, despite allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits with no walks and five strikeouts in his 6.0 innings Friday. His 96 pitchers were just one shy of matching his career-high single-game total.
