URBANA — Two days after Gary Wieneke was admitted at Carle Foundation Hospital after having what’s been categorized as a stroke, the former Illinois and Unity High School cross-country and track coach was in good spirits, according to friend and colleague Dike Stirrett.
“He did have what they think is a stroke — he had some blockage in an artery in his neck,” said Stirrett, the Unity boys’ cross-country coach. Stirrett added Wieneke’s condition is not considered life-threatening. “I saw him (Friday) afternoon. He’s getting better. I don’t know what the prognosis is exactly. He’s got some memory problems, but he’s doing better.
