URBANA - University of Illinois suspended basketball player Jaylon Tate, arrested early Saturday for allegedly punching his girlfriend in the face, made his initial court appearance Sunday morning.

Judge Tom Difanis set bond at $2,00o.

Urbana attorney Tom Bruno, representing the junior point guard, maintained Tate's innocence.

Tate on Saturday was suspended from all team activities pending the investigation into the allegations against him and the pending legal proceedings. The indefinite suspension was announced in a joint statement from Groce and new Illinois athletic director Josh Whitman.
