UI softball player acknowledges role in menorah vandalism

Ruby Rivera remains indefinitely suspended from the Illinois softball team and is admitting responsibility for the incident vandalizing the menorah outside the Chabad Center for Jewish Life early on the morning of Feb. 7.

The junior, who did not play during the team's first five games this season this past weekend at the Florida International Invitational, apologized for the incident in a letter sent to The News-Gazette.

"I would like to first deeply apologize for my actions that took place on the early morning of (Feb. 7)," Rivera wrote. "There was at no point any disrespect or malic meant towards any community or religion, but I take full-on responsibility for my actions.
