CHAMPAIGN — Nathan Scheelhaase passed on what he would typically wear to an Illinois football game.
The former Illini quarterback and school’s career leader in total offense didn’t don his customary No. 2 jersey. Or get the urge to put on any equipment.
The newest member of interim head coach Bill Cubit’s staff, Scheelhaase coached his first game as the Illini’s running backs leader. It was a position Cubit held down in spring practices and training camp before Illinois fired Tim Beckman on Aug. 28.
“It’s been a crazy, crazy week for everybody,” said Scheelhaase, who joined the Illini staff in June as the program’s assistant director of operations.
