The passers will pass, and the runners will run.
That’s how the pros do it, and that’s how new Illini offensive coordinator Garrick McGee will operate next fall. With senior Wes Lunt returning at quarterback, the concept in the recently completed spring session was familiar even if the system is different.
“Wes could potentially be one of the best quarterbacks in the conference,” McGee said. “He’s the best I’ve been around as a passer. When it comes to running the ball, he’ll hand it to our running backs.”
McGee called last year’s versatile performance of Louisville speedster Lamar Jackson an outlier for him as he quickly rattled off pass-oriented QBs under his tutelage: Arkansas’ Ryan Mallett and Tyler Wilson, and Louisville’s Will Gardner.
