LONG GROVE — Illinois men’s golf coach Mike Small finished strong Wednesday at the 66th Illinois Open, carding a 4-under-par final round to finish tied for sixth at 4 under.
Small was tied for 14th at even par after two rounds but wound up the top area finisher at Royal Melbourne Country Club. He finished 12 strokes behind winner David Cooke, an amateur from Lisle.
Former Mahomet-Seymour and Bradley University golfer Seth Trolia improved by 1 stroke on the final day to earn a share of eighth (3 under). Illinois sophomore-to-be Nick Hardy carded the fourth-lowest score in the third round at 6 under to finish tied for 12th (2 under).
