CHAMPAIGN — Ron Zook hadn't heard the news until a reporter called him early Thursday afternoon: His former quarterback, Nathan Scheelhaase, had just been hired as Iowa State's running backs coach.
"That's a great opportunity," the ex-Illinois coach said. "He'll do a great job for them."
Scheelhaase starred for Zook's teams, leading Illinois to consecutive bowl wins in 2010 and '11.
"I know this: He was a passionate person," Zook said. "He loved the game of football. He studied the game of football. It's no surprise to me that he got into coaching. He's a people person.
