CHAMPAIGN — Nathan Scheelhaase played quarterback at Illinois but did plenty of running during his four-year career.
While not official yet, it is expected that Scheelhaase will get the gig of running backs coach for the rest of the season for Illinois.
It’s a position Bill Cubit was moved to this offseason, but one he will likely cede control of now that he’s the program’s interim coach after Illinois athletic director Mike Thomas fired Tim Beckman on Friday.
Either way, the 24-year-old Scheelhaase, who joined the Illini staff in June as an assistant director of operations, will have a role on the sidelines this Friday night when Kent State visits Memorial Stadium for the season opener, according to Cubit.
