Refs to Illinois: Our bad (And Cubit reaction)

Follow along from Bill Cubit's Monday afternoon press conference right here.

A bizarre set of circumstances on Saturday during the Illini's game against Nebraska led to Illinois inadvertently going for it on fourth down when nearly everyone inside Memorial Stadium thought it was third down.

On Monday, the Collegiate Officiating Consortium, which consists of the Big Ten, Mid-American and Missouri Valley Conferences, issued a statement acknowleding a "breakdown in officiating mechanics," during the game.

Here's what transpired during the game on Saturday to start the third quarter.

Geronimo Allison caught what many at the time thought was a 9-yard pass from Wes Lunt to set up second-and-one before Ke'Shawn Vaughn rushed three yards, presumably giving Illinois a first down.
