Possible comeback slips through Illini's fingers

IOWA CITY, Iowa —The final carry for Ke’Shawn Vaughn resulted in a forgettable moment for the true freshman running back at Illinois.

Iowa linebacker Josey Jewell recovered Vaughn’s fumble late in the fourth quarter, allowing Iowa to salt away a 29-20 win against the Illini.

“The kid’s a good player,” Illinois interim coach Bill Cubit said. “They don’t fumble on purpose, and they don’t throw picks on purpose. You’ve got to keep this thing positive. If you get down on a kid at that point there, you lose him, and we can’t afford to lose him.”

Vaughn started his first game with the Illini and finished with decent numbers.
