No protests during pregame pow-wow near Memorial Stadium

CHAMPAIGN — A band of Sioux Indians, including four "fancy dancers," from North Dakota held a traditional pow-wow Saturday across the street from Memorial Stadium before the University of Illinois homecoming game.

There were no protesters in sight, in contrast to the homecoming parade the night before.

Among those from the Native American Guardians Association was Eunice Davidson of Devils Lake, N.D. She's the author of "Aren't We Sioux Enough," about the Spirit Lake Nation's fight with the University of North Dakota to maintain the Fighting Sioux name. The group eventually lost in court.

"They said we didn't have standing.
