CHAMPAIGN — The major development known as The Yards got a vote of approval Monday by the Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District board.
Members voted 6-0 to contribute roughly $25 million to the project, which includes a major expansion of the 20-year-old Illinois Terminal.
The vote doesn't set aside that money, but indicates to the city of Champaign and the developer, Core Spaces, how much it plans to contribute.
"This is a conceptual commitment on our investment," said Karl Gnadt, managing director of the C-U Mass Transit District.
And the MTD is hoping most of that $25 million is covered by two different federal grants, which it will be applying for again this year after losing out last year.
